youtube-dl installer update
#1
A while back there was a thread concerning youtube-dl and I posted some code and a script to remove the version installed by the package manager from the Ubuntu repositories and install the most current version from yt-dl.org, the maintainers of the program. If this version is already installed, the script will update it to the most current version.

I recently modified my original script, making it a little leaner. It's in my GitHub respository.

Distrotube has a good tutorial on using the CLI version.
handy because i notice there is no GUI for it in Debian ie. youtube-dl-gui in the repositories.

The version of youtube-dl from https://yt-dl.org is updated fairly regularly (monthly or more often). Running
Code:
sudo youtube-dl -U
is one option to keep it up to date, Another option is to run a script as a cron or anacron job to be run on a weekly or monthly basis.

Code:
#!/bin/sh

set -e

youtube-dl -U > /dev/null 2>&1

I copied the script as root (using sudo) to /etc/cron.weekly to be run by anacron. You could also use crontab to set it up as a cron job.

I just seen DT's Youtube video on this and it is really good. Like you said!
I have used the GUI front end and I think after watching DT's video I like the CLI better.
I went  an read alot of the settings page that you can use and there are tons for sure...
So far the best I have found to run it, is this: "youtube- dl -i" then copy the link. The " -i" just tells Youtube-dl to ignore any errors and keep going.

I agree a must watch video!
