Ive got an :-

Mentions can upgrade to  Android 5.0.2 Lollipop

If its not possible to make proper use of the device I will keep just using it as an wifi device without "phone" functionally

I believe the most cross platform capability between Linux and an Android phone is provided by KDE connect . You can't use it to make calls from Linux but I believe, amongst other things, you can send sms messages from Linux via the phone.

No, you can install it in any desktop environment.

For ubuntu and Linux Mint run in terminal:
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/indicator-kdeconnect
sudo apt update
sudo apt install indicator-kdeconnect
And you also need the client for your android phone/tablet: https://play.google.com/store/apps/detai...connect_tp

You can root your device using your Linux PC. You need to install the following packages:
Code:
sudo apt install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot

And then you can find a specific guide for your device in https://forum.xda-developers.com
or you can follow this http://www.theitstuff.com/root-android-phone.

Also, check F-Droid is a repository for FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) android applications.
You can download and install the .apk on your android device from the official website https://f-droid.org/en/
