Laptop Can't Change Resolution
#1
(This Issue has been Solved) : Edit

Hello, While the switch from Windows to Ubuntu has been going well so far I've run into one problem.
My laptop's monitor is stuck at max resolution 3840 x 2160
I'd perfer to drop it to 1600 x 900, however under displays there are no futher options as far as resolution.

Xrandr comes up with the folloring
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 3840 x 2160, current 3840 x 2160, maximum 3840 x 2160
default connected primary 3840x2160+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   3840x2160     88.00*

I've tried folloring a few guides to add modes without much effect, though that might be a problem on my end.

My Computer is a Dell Insperon 7000 gaming laptop.
nvidia 1050 ti
16 gb ram

I'm Running Ubuntu Mate, however I've also installed Unity and Gnome and each has the same problem.

I'll continue to do what I can myself to find a fix, but if anyone here could also lend me a hand I'd apriciate it.

Decided to check something, and if I'm reading this right it seems like my computer is attempting to use the integrated graphics, rather then the Nvidia card.

Do you have installed prop. drivers for nVidia ?

Yes, I installed current nvidia drivers, and under additional drivers I tried both 435, the recomended drivers, and 390, which most guides seemed to recomend and nether option seemed to fix the problem.
When I try to change a resolution using xrandr it keeps coming up with a error, Can't get size of gamma for output.

I was able to force it to output at 1600x900 by adding the line GRUB_GFXMODE=1600x900 to my Grub at the recomendation of a guide.

Ok, color me confused, but now since adding that line to the grub, I can now change resolution as well as having several options available.

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1600 x 900, maximum 32767 x 32767
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
eDP-1-1 connected primary 1600x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 346mm x 194mm

( there were several lines for the different resolution options, but I didn't copy them over so as not to make a wall of text)

So, not sure how, but just adding that one line to my Grub seems to have fixed the problem.
